Winter, 1211. Former abbess Helewise moves back to her cell near Hawkenlye Abbey to help the needy, putting a strain on her relationship with Sir Josse D'Acquin, who is called to examine the bodies of three men, one of whom bears a complicated symbol carved into his chest a symbol that signifies vengeance. Meanwhile, far from home, Sir Josse's son, Ninian, has become involved in the cause of the doomed Cathar people, soon to be swept up in a fight that they cannot hope to win.
The Song of the Nightingale (Audible Audio Edition) Alys Clare Charlotte Strevens Oakhill Publishing Books
This series - as pointed out by at least one other reviewer - has completely lost direction, and credibility. The plots now are far from being believable in the context of European Middle Ages. It's a pity: while in the beginning of the series there were nice historical fiction books - even if they had a touch of fantasy - it's difficult now to define the genre of the more recent books.
Not only that. The plot in this particular book, The Song of the Nightingale, is confusing and very uninteresting. I would have given it zero stars, if that was possible.

The Song of the Nightingale (Audible Audio Edition) Alys Clare Charlotte Strevens Oakhill Publishing Books Reviews
This is a wonderful continuation of the series - dealing with loose ends from the last book. Well done. I reazlly enjoyed it.
Read everything I could find by this writer. It is a well written adventure story that stays true to its time.
Another beautifully written addition to the Hawkenlye series. I have all ready downloaded the next I the series. And will read it soon!
I really enjoy this author.
I enjoyed this latest in the series especially because it tied up many of the strands started in the previous novel, "The Rose of the World". As usual it was well researched and well written. The period in which the novel was set was also well drawn as the background for the action.
The novel gives a logical progression in the Hawkenlye series. However the author veers into ever stranger cults and situations. Sometimes it is hard to understand why she sets the story in the mountains with the dying Cathar Christian sect. It's a little depressing.
I have enjoyed these novels ever since the first one about ten years ago. I really enjoy the developing relationship of the main characters, and the addition of the next generation. Since Eleaor of Aquitaine is my favorite historical figure (and ancestress) I enjoy Helewise's connection with her. The forest people are just fanciful enough without going overboard. There have been some great stories in this series, including this one.
